First Aid
Gold Expedition First Aid
It can be difficult to get First Aid instruction for your students for the expedition section of the Gold Award and it is always difficult to make the training realistic.Long Mynd Walking can offer expedition training in the realistic outdoor setting of the Long Mynd. All aspects of the First Aid syllabus – as set out by the D of E - will be covered in a half day. To make up your day you could take up the risk awareness and health and safety issues course.
First Aid and Emergency Procedures
Action in an emergency - resuscitation, airway, breathing and circulation.
The treatment of wounds and bleeding.
Treatment for shock.
The recognition and the immediate treatment of more serious conditions, sprains, dislocations and broken limbs.
The emergency transport of casualties.
The recognition, treatment and prevention of hypothermia.
The treatment of blisters, cuts, abrasions, minor burns and scalds, headaches, insect bites,sunburn and splinters.
Knowing what to do in the case of an accident or emergency.
Summoning help - what people need to know, telephoning for help, the written message.
Getting help, self-help and waiting for help to arrive keeping safe and warm, helping people to find you.
Fee £70 per group of 12
Duration 2-3 hrs
An Awareness of Risk and Health and Safety Issues
Expedition fitness.
Telling people where you are going.
Undertaking a risk assessment.
Keeping together.
Weather forecasts - knowing how, where and when to obtain weather forecasts, relating weather forecasts to observed conditions, looking for signs which will indicate changes in the weather.
Fee £30 per group of 12
Duration 2-3 hrs
Camp Skills
Introduction to camp skills types of equipment stoves etc and its use. Tents and pitching
£25 per hour or by arrangement
Navigation
Adult Groups (two people) – Intense one-to-one instruction over two days on the rudiments of compass and map work also to be competent in walking in ‘whiteout’ or night time. £95 pp or £25 ph
Groups – instruction over one or two days (dependent on requirements) on the rudiments of compass and map work £120 per day. National Navigation Award Scheme certificates and courses by arrangement.

BEL Basic Expedition Leader Award
The BEL is a nationally recognised award that allows people to
Lead groups in lowland areas -
Be responsible for the care of others in the outdoors including day journeys
Organise base and mobile camps
£400 pp
The BEL award is now the minimum qualification required by many Operating
Authorities offering the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme - it is required to train and lead groups for the expedition section of award.
